Detection of EHV-1 in nasopharyngeal swab.
The equine ACUTE RESPIRATORY syndrome refers to a complex set of symptoms that are often numerous and not very specific, such as hyperthermia, serous nasal discharge, or inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. These symptoms may derive from infectious and contagious diseases caused either by viruses such as EHV-1, EHV-4 and equine influenza virus, or by bacteria such as Streptococcus equi subspecies equi.
The Epona tests for respiratory diseases are new generation molecular tests, allowing the detection and discrimination of fragments of the genomes of the EHV-1, EHV-4, equine influenza viruses and/or of Streptococcus equi subspecies equi in a reliable and rapid manner in order to obtain indications as to the pathogen(s) that are involved in the appearance of the observed symptoms.
Unlike traditional PCR tests, Epona tests are performed in a few steps only, on a portable and easy-to-use reading instrument. The result can be obtained in less than 30 minutes at the clinic.
