Main clinical signs

Feline parvovirus (FPV) and canine parvovirus (CPV-2a/b/c) belong to the genus Protoparvovirus, subfamily Parvovirinae, family Parvoviridae. In dogs, CPV-2a/b/c can cause diarrhoea. In cats, the incubation period of the virus lasts from 2 to 7 days and may cause high fever, depression, anorexia, weight loss, diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration. This most often leads to the death of the animal (90% of cases in unvaccinated kittens and young adults). Secretions and excretions from affected individuals, and especially faeces, are the main source of the pathogen. Transmission of the disease requires close contact between a healthy animal and an animal shedding the virus, or between a healthy animal and a contaminated environment/object. The virus usually enters through the oronasal route.
