MANAGING EQUINE INFLUENZA IN A VETERINARY CLINICAL CENTER

Our client suspected an outbreak of equine influenza among its teaching horses. How can it be diagnosed quickly in order to implement reinforced biosecurity measures and prevent its spread to client horses?
Challenges
Our client is a hospital center dedicated to equines. One of the main challenges is managing contamination and particularly the transmission between teaching horses and client horses.
For more than 12 months, the hospital center has been using the Enalees rapid diagnostic solution to detect infectious and respiratory diseases.
Last winter, the center received four teaching horses. One horse quickly developed hyperthermia (39.5°C) and signs of lethargy. The veterinary team suspected an influenza outbreak. To confirm the clinical symptoms, nasopharyngeal samples were taken from the horses.
Solution
Biological samples were prepared using ready-to-use reagents included in the diagnostic kit. It only takes a few minutes to process the samples before placing them in the analyzer to perform amplification using LAMP PCR.
After thirty minutes, the result confirmed the suspicion of the equine influenza virus.
“The simplicity and ergonomics of the kits allow them to be handled quickly by our interns as well as by reference veterinarians. The results obtained with the Enalees tests make it possible to establish a reliable diagnosis and control the outbreak through reinforced biosecurity measures.”
“One of the many advantages of the solution is the expertise and availability of the Enalees teams. They regularly provide on-site training for interns with scientific courses followed by practical exercises.”
Key benefits
> On-site team training
> Isolation of infected horses
> Reinforced biosecurity measures
