OPTIMIZING DIAGNOSIS AND FOLLOW-UP OF PARASITIC INFECTIONS IN A MIXED VETERINARY CLINIC

The Baume-les-Dames veterinary clinic, co-led by Dr. Tomatis, is a mixed practice treating small animals, horses and exotic animals. Since May–June 2022, the clinic has been using Enalees’ rapid molecular diagnostic solution, including the EPONA™ kit for vector-borne diseases, to diagnose parasitic infections in horses.
Challenge
A sport horse was presented to the clinic with non-specific clinical symptoms: fatigue after exercise, prolonged recovery time, and reduced performance.
During the clinical examination, the animal showed no major impairment in its general condition. However, blood tests revealed anemia. Differential diagnosis suggested a piroplasmosis-like disease.
Solution
The veterinary team immediately performed an in-clinic Enalees EPONA® test for vector-borne diseases. In less than 30 minutes, the test showed a positive result for Theileria equi.
A therapeutic protocol was immediately initiated:
> Administration of Scopolamine butylbromide and Metamizole (20–25 ml intravenously)
> Ketoprofen 10 mg/ml and Imidocarb (4 mg/kg, 4 treatments every 72 hours)
> Additional support using the Redplex® product to optimize recovery
After six weeks, a follow-up test using the same EPONA® kit confirmed the complete elimination of the parasite.
